LAWN CARE IN SPRING

May
In this season a need may arise of the first lawn mowing. Therefore as soon as the grass has reached the height of 8-10 cm, you should mow your lawn by leaving 5-6 cm of its height. Use lawn mowers with grass catchers. Do not leave vegetable remainders on the surface as this may lead to rotting of the grass. Do not cut grass too low; allow your lawn to recover after winter. Prepare the irrigation system in case it rains rarely. You should carry out additional sowing on the damaged lawn areas that have undergone winterkilling and damping-off. First of all remove all the remainders of leaves and sprouts from the damaged areas. If you have noticed that water have stood for a long time on these areas, then you should level the ground surface by adding soil brought from another places. Loosen the sowed area with a rake. Scatter the seed mixture that you have used for the whole lawn area. Press the soil firmly by using a veneer sheet or a board. Irrigate the whole lawn. It is desirable to do it in the evening when you have sowed the damaged areas. If you notice the lesion focus caused by diseases on your lawn, you must take prompt actions for its recovery and prevention of disease spreading. If, after fertilizers application and first mowing, the changes for the better did not take place, there a need have arisen to take thoroughgoing measures for the lawn recovery. Cut the grass as low as possible on the damaged areas. Loosen the upper layer of the soil at a depth of 15-20 cm. Let the soil to have a rest and in 7-10 days sow the area using the same seed mixture. In case of need of the urgent lawn maintenance, use seed mixtures that grow very fast.

April
As soon as the positive temperature has become settled you may begin the procedure of spring additional fertilizing application. Give preference to complex nitrogen fertilizers. This nutrient in combination with phosphorus, potassium and microelements will ensure quick growth and recovery of the lawn after winter. The rate of fertilizer application is usually marked on the packaging. After the drying up of the upper layer of the soil, there a need arises to remove dry and decayed leaves and sprouts from the lawn. To do this, use an ordinary rake and move it backward and forward the lawn area. This procedure ensures the tillage of the lawn surface. This also creates favorable conditions for the replacement of air in the root layer of the soil. It is a preventive measure of various diseases as well.
After this procedure it is recommended to carry out additional sowing. You may use the same seed mixture you had used for the whole lawn. Thus you will preserve the lawn integrity.
Scatter the seed mixture evenly on the lawn surface and next water the whole lawn area. If you did not manage to apply fertilizers during thawing, you may do it after listed working.

March
As soon as a thaw has set in, do not allow the over-moistening of your lawn area to take place. Avoid the formation of puddles by pricking the damp areas with a pitchfork. To avoid doing this procedure it is preferable to perform drainage works in autumn. Minimize the movements on the damp lawn, as there ruts, dents or footsteps may appear, especially if your lawn is young.
